You have heard the term enzymes referenced frequently in the skin care industry, but what do they really do? First, enzymes are proteins that initiate change and work on the surface layers of the skin. In skin care, enzymes accelerate the skin’s natural exfoliation process. The enzymes exfoliator will gently break down the bonds that connect dead cells to our skin, preventing pores from clogging and helping with uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. As we get older, our cell turnover slows down and our skin can look dull and uneven. Enzymes will help to gently exfoliate the dead surface layers of the skin, leaving our skin looking refreshed with a more even skin tone. Enzymes in skin care can be derived from fruits and vegetables. Common enzyme exfoliators include those from pineapple, papaya, and pumpkin. These enzymes are vitamin rich and packed with antioxidants and are great for anti-aging treatments. Several of our professional PCA mask treatments, including the Therapeutic Papaya Mask and the Therapeutic Pumpkin Mask contain fruit enzymes designed to exfoliate the skin, resulting in smooth and hydrated skin. These mask treatments can be incorporated into a customized facial treatment or can be a stand alone treatment.
